Fierce and Fabulous Animal Print McCall's M7349

This pattern McCall’s 7349 came as a free pattern with Love Sewing Magazine recently. I eagerly bought the issue as this was a style that I had wanted to sew for a while. It is a fit and flare style with princess seams to achieve the “fit and flare”.
You have the option of making it sleeveless, short or long sleeved. There are 3 length options, of which I chose the maxi length. The neckband is like that of a t-shirt. The line drawings on the pattern envelope are attractive with plenty of ideas like colour blocking (something I am definitely going to try in the future).
It really is one of those patterns that is quite versatile depending on the fabric you use for it. It can easily be a smart work dress in a muted solid colour like navy ponte or a fun and flirty cocktail dress in a bright floral scuba crepe. Speaking of fabric…
Where to start with this gorgeous animal print Jersey Fabric that is a Lady McElroy design? The colour is what drew me in with its hypnotic hues of purple and pink on magenta while still being fiercely an animal print. I loved it the moment I laid eyes on it.
This is a type of jersey you may know as ITY jersey – quite a slinky type that is soft to the touch and has a lustre finish. It has 2 way stretch that is to say it stretches along the both the straight and cross grain. This dual stretch feature makes for super comfortable garments.
I used what leftover fabric I had to sew up a head wrap. I was going to make a belt however I realised that the style worked better without a belt.
Sewing Construction Details
I sewed a size 10 based on the finished garment measurements that you find on the pattern sheet. I wanted a near snug fit and it worked out to a fit I envisioned.
For the main sewing I used my overlocker and for the hems, my coverstitch. This was a quick sewing project, despite the maxi length it took less than an hour to sew up.
Slinky jersey fabric will show up every dimple, lump and bump against which it sits. It doesn’t bother me at all and it is easily remedied by lining it with either power mesh or itself. Alternatively wearing body shapewear underneath can achieve the same thing.
Paired with the head wrap I must say I feel elegant! I love the bright colours of the fabric and the fit on the style. And how the fabric moves when I walk!!!! Swoon worthy! I am partial to fabrics that have a drapey handle which allows them to billow and flow with even the slightest breeze. #win/win.
