Simplicity 1064 Mock Wrap Tunic

Chambray Fabrics are a lightweight woven cotton fabric that is great for shirts and dresses. A plain weave that involves a coloured and a white thread being woven together.
This blue Butterfly Chambray Fabric is very soft to the touch with a bright colourful design. It is 100% cotton and machine washable. Being a natural fibre it’s very important to prewash in case of shrinkage. I washed at 40’ then steam pressed before cutting out my pattern.
Summer may have past but as I going off for some winter sun I decided on Simplicity 1064. This easy-to-sew mock wrap around design works great over jeans and leggings as shown on the envelope but I was thinking of version C as as cover up by the pool!
Stay stitching the neck edges stopped any stretching of the neck edge before attaching the facings, which were then understitched to keep them from rolling out and showing on the right side.
At this point I changed my construction method from the pattern instructions by adding the sleeves flat before sewing up the side seams. Easing the sleeve fit and matching the notches.
I find this easier than fitting in the round and then the sleeve and side seam can be done in one go before lapping the right bodice front over the left and basting in place.
The skirt front and back are then joined before attaching to the bodice. The waistline seam allowance is double stitched to form a casing ready for adding the elastic to fit. I decided not to make fabric tie belt that is shown on the pattern.
Being a woven fabric I overlooked all seams to prevent fraying. To finish the sleeve and curved hem edge I decided to do a rolled hem on my overlocker using a thread colour to match part of the butterfly design.
This tunic is a straightforward and reasonably quick make and the chambray has a lovely soft touch to work with and to wear! It presses crisply allowing a neat finish when working with it and didn’t crease to much when packed in my suitcase. Being 100% cotton it was pleasantly cool and lightweight to wear.
I like the combination of the tunic style and the cheerful butterfly fabric to layer up over a camisole and jeans
Or to wear on its own!
Happy Sewing :)

Hi Lesley, Thank you, sizing on body was fine though I would lengthen the top sections next time. Sleeves were quiet a tight fit. · 19th Jan 2019 05:36pm

I love what you have done! You have inspired me to give version C a go. Can I just ask how the sizing was? Did you need to make any alterations? Thankyou for sharing your experience. · 13th Jan 2019 04:44am
