A Basic Tee, With A Twist
Posted on Friday the 19th April 2019 by Lady Sewalot
Hello all! This months Minerva Make is a basic tee, with a twist. I love a good slogan/quote tee but my favourite quotes aren’t usually so mainstream. That’s where the DIY comes in!
I had two of my favourite quotes in mind for this project. The first was ‘As You Wish’ from The Princess Bride and ‘Come What May’ from Moulin Rouge, both films that I’ve watched over and over and over again. ‘Come What May’ ended up winning this time, but I’m sure I’ll have an ‘As You Wish’ tee before long. The fabric is Cotton Jersey
which is nice and soft, but slightly thinner than I had anticipated. Applying the Iron On Letters
was the first thing that I did after cutting my tee out.
I used my self drafted leotard pattern as a base, cropping it at the waist. I cut out the letters that I needed, placed them roughly, refined, flipped them so they were facing the fabric and ironed away. It was very satisfying to peel the paper bits away to see the letters transferred to the fabric. If I did it again i’d shove the letters up a couple of inches so the first line corresponds to the underarm seam, just for proportions sake.
Sewing it together was super quick. Patternwise, next time I’d make a few alterations. The sleeves fit almost disturbingly closely on the shoulders and on the whole everything is quite tight, so I’d like to grade it all a couple of cm bigger and see how it turns out. I think it’s also a tad long which is why it’s a bit wrinkly in the pictures. Finishing wise the neckline is finished with a neckband which was topstitched with a zigzag. I turned over the raw edges of the sleeve and body hems and topstitched those with a 3 step zig zag.
All in all I love how this tee turned out and I’m very excited to incorporate it into my spring/summer 2019 wardrobe and to make some more! I’m also very intrigued to see how the lettering holds up in the wash.
Thank you very much for reading and to Minerva for providing the supplies for this project!
