A Snowman Skirt

For my December Minerva Crafts make I decided I wanted to sew something festive without it being overtly “Christmasy.” I love this snowman print Fabric because it could be seen as a Christmas outfit, but I can still wear it throughout the rest of the winter since there is an absence of Christmas trees, reindeer, elves, or Santa Claus. I didn’t realize this until the fabric arrived but there are several adorable animals hanging out with the snowmen, which makes this print even better!
I cut out a simple flared skirt based off of the skirt from Gertie Sews Vintage Casual. I don’t actually own the book, but my sister-in-law does so I borrowed it a while ago to make a simple denim skirt. Since then I have used that skirt as a “pattern” many times. It is such a classic, flattering shape! I inserted a centered zipper at the center back and finished off the waist with a strip of bias binding.
I used the amazing Prym Iron Ruler to get a tidy hem. This ruler is absolutely brilliant! Since getting it, I have had immense success getting wonderfully even hems. It is a rather floppy ruler which is very different from what I’m used to. But if it was your normal hard plastic, it would melt under the heat of the iron. I expect to get absolutely loads of use from it.
To go with the skirt, and many other garments in my wardrobe, I also made a long sleeved t-shirt using the Agnes pattern by Tilly and the Buttons. With cold weather already approaching, I have long needed more winter appropriate clothes. This grey top, while slightly boring, is extremely versatile! I can wear it with pretty much anything including underneath many of my summer dresses. That means that I am able to get so much more wear out of my clothes!
The fabric I used is a medium weight Ponte Knit Fabric. It has a decent amount of stretch, but is quite warm. I have noticed that the outline of my camisole is visible underneath the shirt. Although it isn’t ideal, it doesn’t bother me enough to not wear it. Plus if I layer it, no one will notice!
I have already worn these garments many times. I love that I can wear them together as a cute outfit, but they also slip seamlessly into regular rotation amongst my other clothes. I love wearing the skirt with my other Agnes tees and simple button-up shirts. I can wear the shirts tucked or untucked and it looks cute either way. And, as I mentioned before, the tee is enabling me to wear some of my favorite summer dresses all year round. Overall, I think these will be some of the most worn projects I have made for Minerva Crafts.
