Art Gallery Fabric Rayon Wrap Dress

Have you ever sewn a dress for someone else only to find that you want to keep said dress? This is just such a project. Following on from an earlier DVF wrap dress (in gorgeous viscose jersey) – I have sewn another DVF wrap dress! Only this time, it is for my sister. Well, here it is, dear readers, the dress that made me reconsider my preference for bright florals.
Given that the fabric was the life-altering selection here – we will start there. This is Art Gallery Fabrics rayon so you know it is high-quality fabric. AGF rayon is a soft lightweight fabric. Meadow dim has natural colours and nature-inspired imagery. The colours are beautifully muted with some energising pops of sunset orange.
After ordering many samples my sister fell in love with this vintage-y style print and colour. In all my years of sewing this was not a print and colour I’d ever have selected but once I saw it – I was taken aback by how lovely it was! It has opened my mind to exploring other colour regions so to speak.
Moving on to the technicalities of fabric care, I prewashed the rayon on a 30-degree celsius wash and tumble dry as normal. It was colour fast. The properties of rayon make it perfect for wrap style dresses. Its properties include – a good hand feel, low pilling and it is breathable.
The one tip I would share is to use lightweight woven interfacing to sew up the facing that goes all the way around the front of the dress. That is the critical pattern piece that gives this wrap dress its classy finish at the front.
To make the pattern fit my sister, I did a small bust adjustment (SBA), a swayback adjustment and took in the waist by 1”. The pattern has cuff on the sleeves but my sister didn't want the cuffs. She opted for the ¾ length sleeve with a simple hem. These adjustments produced a well-fitting dress.
This dress is so relaxed and with its floral print, flowing form, and simple shape, the DVF wrap dress is classy and modern while also evoking Liberty prints from the turn of the century. Just the right amount of nostalgic – perfect for garden parties.
As for the recipient – she said: “ I feel like I am wearing what Kate Middleton might wear”. A ringing endorsement me thinks! See you on the next wrap dress adventure!
