Despite my love of novelty print fabrics, this December’s project for the Minerva Crafts Blogger Network represents my first ever Christmas-themed dress.
I loved this Christmas Fabric with its red print with black and white reindeer, some stripy, some spotty, some floral and some plain - it seemed Christmassy but not too babyish. Better still, it’s 60” wide so I only needed 2m to make pretty much any dress I wanted.
At first I was planning on making a Tilly and the Buttons Bettine dress with this. The relaxed style appealed to me as I thought it would be comfortable for wearing whilst overindulging in delicious foods and drink!
However, the Bettine and I had a very brief fling which came to an end after several toiles and one completed dress, but that’s another story... As it happens this fabric wouldn’t have been the most suitable for the Bettine anyway, as it doesn’t have much drape.
One morning last week I rediscovered a dress I made with Simplicity Amazing Fit Pattern 1606. I put it on and instantly loved the style and the fit. Recently I’ve been sewing and wearing more practical clothing: straighter skirts, layers, plainer colours, less shaping etc (pinafore dresses especially), and putting on this fit and flare dress made me feel like I was going to back to an older version of me that had got pushed to the background somehow.
This style of dress is what I think of as being my ‘signature style’ - colourful novelty print with fitted bodices and swishy skirts. It felt good, and I wanted more!
Sewing the dress was really straightforward as this is the 4th version of this dress I have made. I lined it with some white poplin I had in my stash. I like the back detail of the dress - the zip only comes part-way up the back, then there is an opening which is secured with a button and a handmade thread loop at the neck edge.
I’m a sucker for a nice back detail, even though it will mainly be covered by a cardigan! I did a lapped zip because they are my favourite type these days - so much comfier than a concealed zip when you lean back!
My six year old daughter took these photos for me, so forgive the low and slanted viewpoint!!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, and that you have a great New Year too!
Thank you for the fabric, Minerva! I bought a reindeer ring to match!
