For the Love of Julia
Posted on Sunday the 2nd July 2017 by Alison Jane
Hello everyone. Another month gone by ….. as I get older the time seems to disappear even quicker! I hope you have had a lovely few weeks of sewing since my last post and that you enjoy reading about my Julia Top.
This was another perfect match of fabric to pattern. This gorgeous wide striped Cotton Jersey Fabric is so soft and comfortable with just the right amount of stretch and recovery to make a lovely Sew Me Something Julia Top.
The colour is fresh and summery and makes this a perfect top for cooler summer days.
I love the funnel neck, although there is also an alternative round neck version in the pattern.
The looseness of the body is flattered by the fitted sleeves and I chose to use the fabric in the opposite direction for the luscious long cuffs and the lovely funnel neck to add a bit of interest.
The pockets are genius, I loved learning this technique, folding the seam and creating an inseam front pocket. This top has been worn and laundered many times and the fabric is still as good as new.
Most of the stitching is done on the overlocker and I used this gorgeous silky Overlocker Thread.
These snips are so simple to use and as sharp as sharp, a very useful tool to have next to my machines.
I love this pretty little tin of pins and the lid slides to the side making them very easy to carry around without spilling.
General sewing information for this project …. I stabilised my shoulder seams with iron on hem tape.
I used pinking shears to neaten the edge of the pockets as it's not possible to overlock them, I used a zig zag stitch on my sewing machine for the parts that I couldn't sew on the overlocker, the wide stripes were quite easy to pattern match hooray, I hemmed with a stitch width of 3.5 to avoid puckering and I pressed with a tailors ham and a pressing cloth for crisp seams.
This lovely Dressmaking Fabric comes in other colour ways and would make fabulous summer tee shirts and tops. And all the Sew Me Something patterns are particularly well drafted and come with incredibly clear and concise instructions. This Julia Top will be worn all year round and I have made many more as I love it with jeans and leggings. I hope you will all enjoy making a stripy Julia Top!
Happy sewing …. See you next month.
