Shine all day in liquid metal Lycra leotards.
Buying the right gymnastics leotard for kids can be a frustrating experience especially when buying online where the range of designs is more appealing. Even when the measurements are correct, it comes down to the fabric used as to whether it will truly fit or not.
There are many benefits to sewing your own leotards including the ability to customise the pattern to your heart’s desire – think rhinestones, sequins, lace appliqués. With this, in mind I set out to expand my sewing repertoire by sewing gymnastics leotards for my twins.
It was easy enough to go to the Dancewear Fabrics section of the Minerva site and search through for a fabric the twins liked. The Metallic Lycra Fabric comes in 12 mouthwatering shades. Each daughter chose their colours: magenta and turquoise.
Jalie 3136 is an empire-waist leotard with optional skirt (sewn over the leotard) to turn it into a skating dress. I made view A: the leotard with binded crossover neckline and cap sleeves.
This beautiful metallic fabric, crafted from shiny Lycra, provides style and comfort allowing for movement with ease across the floor and apparatus. Magenta and turquoise are show-stopping colours and I had a lot of fun sewing up the brilliantly shiny fabric – it catches the light ever so beautifully!
Jalie has a useful video sewalong on Youtube which you can easily refer to. The instructions cater for those without overlockers as well. I used my overlocker for the seams and a coverstitch for the neckline binding. They have clever techniques for bindings – worth checking out as an alternative finish to knit necklines.
For the life of me I couldn’t find the bit where it tells you the length of the elastic for the leg openings. I ended up measuring my daughter’s legs where the leotard would be and removing 1” from the measurement to determine the length of elastic.
Jalie 3136 is a great basis for creating dazzling gymnastics and/or dance costumes. I’d really like to try the view that features the asymmetric skirt. I have always found Jalie patterns to be reliable and true to size – this is no exception. I like that the size range goes from 1 year old all the way to adult sizes. This makes for a great value pattern. Adding to its value is the fact the pattern has different views to create unique leotards. As for the recipients of the leotards – they love them!
