What can I sew while my overlocker is sadly out of action...? Quilts! It's a very good excuse to get cracking on an idea I've been planning for a while, designed to replace our tired and thoroughly cat-destroyed old sofa throw.
Our living room has a grey and yellow theme so I wanted a quilt to match. I resisted my usual urge to choose all the pretty prints and instead picked classic solids from Minerva’s cotton poplin fabric range. The backing will be the darker grey and I have some lovely cotton wadding for the filling.
I sketched out several design options in Illustrator before consulting with my other half and narrowing it down to a simple half-square triangle (HST) design with the colours randomly distributed. The flying geese and ‘tumbling blocks’ options were close second and third, I think I’ll be revisiting them before long for more quilts!
I chose the HSTs because I have done that type of construction before so am familiar with how it all goes together. I’m going to use Thangles, sewable paper templates which make it really quick and easy to create strips of triangles.
My post this month is just to show you my plans for next month so be sure to pop back next month to see the finished quilt! If you'd like more lovely quilting inspiration, check out my Pinterest board. Anyone else driven to quilts by either machine malfunctions or the chilly weather?
