It’s no secret that I adore Tilly’s new book, Stretch, and I have now made nearly all the patterns. Even though I am a ‘ahem’ mature woman, I find Tilly’s Patterns to suit me and fit me well and I think I have more clothes made in her Patterns in my wardrobe than any others.

I have been making a lot of the Freya tops – I love them – and they are perfect with jeans, skirts, under dungarees and with a cardigan on top (try the Juniper cardy, it’s brilliant) so I thought I would make the dress version. This glorious spotty Knit Fabric caught my eye – lovely and bright for summer and my very favourite perfect blend of cotton elastane which for me is the best sort of jersey to work with. It’s a medium weight with perfect stretch and comes in lots of different and fabulous colourways.

As luck would have it, I had the perfect colour match thread in my stash, this gorgeous gutter man turquoise.

The dress comes together and is a really easy make. The back and front pieces are cut on the fold and because this is a non directional print, I was able to cut the sleeves from the centre, folded over lengthways. The funnel neck is just a rectangle with a back seam and folded in half. I sewed all of it on the overlocker in coordinating threads with the turquoise thread in my left needle as that would be the one that would maybe be seen. However, it can also be sewn on a sewing machine using zig zag stitch or stretch stitch, I find a walking foot very helpful with jersey and also blue tip or stretch needles. Tilly explains this really well in the book.

The sleeves are set in flat and then the sides whizzed up and just hemming to be done. It’s a quick hours make for a lovely new dress!

My lovely husband recently surprised me with a coverstitch machine, so I sew my all my hems with it. It gives such a neat finish and no need to overlock the hem first as the coverstitch does it all!

I always lengthen Tilly’s Patterns for me. Whilst I am only 5’4”, they are still a bit short for me. I add 2 inches always.

I’m going to be wearing this dress with a denim jacket, pink footless tights and camel coloured Superga sneakers ….. it’s all planned! It’s set to become my favourite summer dress – I feel the cold!

I totally recommend this fabric for all your stretch sewing, it’s perfect. Get it in all the colours! And if you haven’t already got the Tilly book, WHY NOT?

Until next time, happy sewing – hope the sun shines too xx
