Happy July! With a new month comes a new Minerva Crafts Blogger Network post - and this time I've taken on needlework. I blame the heat! Talking of the heat and the lovely sunny weather that the UK's been experiencing recently, this month's make is close-to-perfect for the time of year. This month I made a needlework beach bag!
The project was such fun to make and great if you don't have a lot of time to sit down and sew. Everything that you need for the project is contained in this Design Works kit and the only prep work involved is cutting up the canvas. The bag is made up of 34 squares of plastic canvas (like cross stitch canvas) which you embroider using the aran yarn provided. I think each square took me between 20-30 minutes, making it the ideal project for keeping your hands busy whilst watching TV. There are 3 square designs in total, featuring lots of different stitches that you copy from the charts given. You know those sewing cards you used to get when you were little - cardboard pictures with a shoelace to thread through? It reminded me of those!
Anyway, once you're done embroidering you then assemble the squares in a random pattern and stitch them all together. I thought this step would take me ages but it turned out to be the easiest bit. Next you attach a piece of felt - the bag's lining - and fold the whole thing into a bag shape, stitching the 'seams' closed. Finally you just need to sew on the wooden handles and - ta da!
If you're looking for a sewing project to take on holiday with you, to stitch by the pool or on the beach, then I really recommend this kit. It'd be great for kids to help with too. Even my husband got involved at one stage! I plan to use my new bag for upcoming summer events - namely my week's holiday in Portugal this August. It's the perfect size for a book, some sun cream and a bottle of wine!
