For me, and I'm sure many of you, a dressing gown is an item worn everyday from the wardrobe. So why didn't I make my own sooner?!

I do love a fluffy dressing gown but a light and pretty robe is so much more versatile. Firstly, it certainly is more feminine and makes you feel pretty and glam when wearing it... because if you can't act like Mariah Carey in your home, when can you?!

It's also small enough to pack in an overnight bag for a trip away or a suitcase for a holiday - I don't know about you but I hate sitting in a poorly lit hotel room in my pants doing my hair and make up!!

I have a collection of dressing gowns and matching chemises but they're all from the high street and made of a very static silky fabric making them not the most flattering of wears. So, as soon as I spotted the Buchanan Robe Sewing Pattern from Gather on the Minerva site, I knew I had to make one!

For my version I used this floral print Poly Cotton Dress Fabric for the main fabric and a simple Plain Polycotton Dress Fabric in black for the contrast fabric. The pattern is beautifully packaged and comes with very easy to follow instructions, Gather Kits suggest the pattern is suitable for a confident Beginner. There are two options for pockets, either a 'patch pocket' or an 'in seam' pocket - I went for the in seam pocket for my version.

As with most cotton fabrics my chosen two were a dream to work with and the whole project came together really nicely and only took an afternoon to make. All of the seams are enclosed and finished with a top stitch making this garment is beautiful inside and out.

As well as a beautiful make for yourself I also think the Buchanan would be a gorgeous handmade gift to give at... I'm going to say it... Christmas! Now is the time to get these project ideas together and start making gifts in time. It would work in lots of different fabrics and I even have some embroidery ideas for my next one. There are lots and lots of possibilities and if you're feeling inspired, please tag me in your makes as I'd love to see them!
