I love fabric with prints and patterns and as the quote says ‘Fabric shopping is a separate hobby to sewing’ and my oh my are there some beautiful choices around at the moment! However, using these gorgeous fabrics for pretty garments is fabulous but you need some wardrobe staples to pair them with. That is where the Deer & Doe Brume Skirt comes in, the perfect neutral skirt for all seasons!??
The Brume offers two lengths, a midi and a pencil skirt. Both are a high waisted style to be sewn in a jersey fabric. The skirt features panels at the side and back, with seams that sit in place of darts at the back. Altogether there are six pattern pieces, which makes it seem like a complication for a simple skirt but trust me it’s worth it for the extra details on the finished garment.
I chose this beautiful square Textured Jersey Fabric from Minerva for my version, it is available in 8 different colours and is just £4.99 a meter, making this skirt a bargain as you only need 1m for the mini skirt.
As well as a scrap busting project it can also be made in as little as an hour… including the cutting out and sewing.
This time I went for the mini length as I thought this time of year it would be perfect for pairing with tights and boots. For me I think the pencil skirt will be fab in the summer with sandals and a camisole top. As it has been created solely for jersey fabric it is such a comfy garment to wear and could easily be dressed up to wear to the office for work or out for dinner, the kind of dinner you need to undo your top button for… they’re my favourite!
Deer and Doe instructions are easily to follow and have line drawings to help you follow along, making this a perfect project for beginners. Don’t be afraid of jersey if you are a beginner, it is easy to work with and the fit can be forgiven as it stretches of course. You don’t even need an overlocker, it can all be sewn using either the stretch stitch or a narrow zig zag stitch.
I see a lot more Brume skirts in the future for my wardrobe, it’s the perfect staple piece to add to a capsule wardrobe which I am contemplating giving a go! I’ve also discovered the Brume skirt lines up perfectly with the princess seams of the Deer & Doe Zephyr bodice to make the perfect Bodycon dress…the possibilities are endless!
Happy Sewing!
