The Ida Clutch Bag
Posted on Sunday the 4th March 2018 by Alison Jane
I so enjoyed making this gorgeous bag.
I used these lovely Clips instead of pins to ensure there were no visible holes in the pleather.
I’ve used The Ida Clutch Bag pattern and brilliant online tutorial by Kylie And The Machine. The pattern is very easy and straightforward to print and cut out and the online tutorial is faultless. Absolutely every step is photographed and expertly explained and it’s just not possible to go wrong!
I perched my tablet on the ironing board and followed every step. No head scratching moments at all.
The leather needle made construction easy. The pleather is super buttery soft and is backed with a fabric mesh …. rather like scuba ……and was much easier to sew than I thought it would be. Neat topstitching on the corners and the zip is essential because it will be on show. I tried hard to be neat!
And on ‘lumpy’ bits I used my trusty hump jumper.
Putting the lining in is a lovely stage when the clutch seems to be coming together really beautifully.
I hadn’t used a magnetic clasp before but found it really easy. I used my buttonhole chisel to create the tiny holes to push the prongs through but the rest is all done by hand and is really surprisingly simple. I cut out a small piece of pleather with my pinking shears to place under the back of each side of the clasp just to add some extra support.
And then it’s done! I’m going to make them in all the colours – this faux leather is gorgeous and the cotton lawn makes a perfect interesting lining. But it could be made from any dress fabric, maybe to match an outfit for a special occasion, and also in soft furnishing fabrics. All the pieces are interfaced so the choice of the strength of the interfacing will depend on the fabric choice. Metal zips with interesting pulls will elevate this make too. There are instructions online to make a tassel zip pull which makes the bag look really high end.
I hope you like my clutch and I hope that you will make one too!
See you next month with something for the men!
